My mentally ill neighbor is causing more and more issues… what can I do?

Get security cameras with audio to record any threats.

Big dog, cameras, and file a report every single time he does something out of line.

I think I can help, but I’d need to see a few pictures of the area.

Asking his mom if he’s dangerous probably won’t get you an honest answer.

In some states, if you’re truly scared for your safety, you can start a process for a 72-hour mental health evaluation. You could also contact Adult Protective Services if you’re worried for his mom—they might know of other resources.

If nothing else, consider moving.

Cops see it as a mental issue—they won’t step in unless there’s real harm involved.

Trying to act on something he says could get you in trouble, especially if he’s legally considered disabled. Moving might be your best option if you want to avoid constant tension.

@Wylie
You’re right in a legal sense. But I’m here looking for advice on handling things without just packing up and leaving. I don’t want to see him hurt, just want him to get the help he needs. But if he steps onto our property and threatens us, that’s different. I want to be prepared in case things go south.
