Hey all, I’m looking to upgrade my shotgun after my cheap Turkish 12ga pump failed me. Thinking about going for something like a Mossberg or Remington—maybe the Mossberg 590A1? Any American gun owners here got recommendations for a reliable shotgun under $800? This would be for a backup plan in case of a serious threat from an armed trespasser. Appreciate any advice!
Just picked up a 590A1 Retrograde for about $750 recently. It’s built like a tank! I can hit an 18-inch steel target at 100 yards with slugs. But honestly, you don’t really need the A1 model—a regular 590 around $400 would do just fine. If you’re in a humid area, consider the Benelli Supernova Tactical too.
I’d go with the Mossberg 500 because of the ambi safety. Even if you’re right-handed, it’s handy if you ever need to shoot from your non-dominant side.
I’m all about semi-autos myself. The Beretta A300 Ultimate Patrol goes for around that price and is pretty similar to the 1301. Lower recoil and faster follow-up shots if that’s a factor for you. Maybe check out a few comparison videos?
Maverick 88 is the budget version of the Mossberg 500. You can get it for $200-300, and it’s compatible with Mossberg 500 accessories.
Maverick 88 Security.
Nice spread on it…
Check out Beretta 1301 Tactical, Benelli M4, and Mossberg 590A1.

I waited over a year for a 590A1 and never got it. Bet they’re still backordered for a year.
Remington all the way.
I love my 590A1! Got it on sale for around $450. Holds 9 rounds and it’s used by the Marines. Works for me!
Between Mossberg and Remington, I’d go with Mossberg for sure. Remington hasn’t been the same since Freedom Group took over. But if you could stretch your budget, I’d check out the A300 Ultima.
Did you mean the DF12 that failed?
I use a Benelli M4.

When you say ‘best,’ you’re right about the M4. Original poster should’ve asked for ‘good under $800,’ though!

Haha, didn’t read the full post before recommending it!

Awesome choice, but definitely not under $800.

Oh yeah, definitely not cheap. But for me, protecting my family’s worth the cost.
For home defense, I’d go with a bullpup. Check out the KSG or KS7.

Don’t buy the KS7 without watching the Honest Outlaw video on it falling apart. I’ve got a KSG and like it, but Smith & Wesson has a similar model with more metal parts that might be more reliable. But if we’re talking regular shotguns, I’d suggest Mossberg 88, 500, or 590 based on budget or a Remington 870. If you can splurge, go for Beretta or Benelli M4.
