I’m thinking about getting a machete. I know a lot of people rely on guns, but I don’t want one for reasons I’d rather not explain. What are some other good options?
Just a heads up to everyone:

That’s a great idea.

Dogs are amazing, but they’re a long-term responsibility. My dog needs food at specific times, daily walks, and lots of play. If you’re considering one, make sure you’re ready for the commitment. They’re not just for protection—they’re family for 10–15 years.
@Sage
Totally agree. Dogs are incredible, but some are quirky. I had one that would stash food and treats like a squirrel! If you get one, take time to bond with them—they’re worth it. As for defense, maybe consider a taser or bear spray alongside locks and lights.

Dogs are great for home security. They hear intruders before you do, their bark can scare people off, and they’re always on alert. Just make sure you’re ready to care for one.
Just rewatch Home Alone for inspiration.
In the US, home intruders often have guns. If you’re against guns, know that other weapons might not be enough. Legally, using something like a machete could land you in trouble depending on your state laws. Self-defense laws vary, so be cautious.
Try a taser and maybe night vision goggles.

I already have lights in my house.

Fair point, but night vision gives you an edge since intruders won’t have it. A taser is non-lethal, which makes mistakes less tragic.
A baseball bat might be better than a machete. It’s effective without causing fatal injuries or a mess. Plus, you don’t risk cutting yourself in a struggle.
I keep a forest axe and a hunting knife. They’re useful tools and could work for defense if needed.

Knives are risky for defense. Both you and the intruder are likely to get hurt if it comes to that.
Aluminum bat in one hand, a bright tactical flashlight in the other. Simple and effective.
Get a German Shepherd.
How about a taser? They’re effective and non-lethal.
Flashbangs! Toss one and watch them run.
Check out pepper ball launchers. They’re non-lethal but very effective. Byrna and Umarex make great options.
