Hey everyone, I’ve been dealing with a problem for a while where people are jumping my wooden and chain link fences. It’s messing up my fences, and even with cameras, they keep running through my yard.
What can I do to stop them from wrecking my fence? Any suggestions would be really helpful.
You could try growing some climbing rose bushes or other thorny plants on the chain link part. For the wooden fence, maybe put some flower boxes with cacti if the weather is right.
How about greasing the fence?

That could work! I’ve been thinking about sprinkling flour to track where they go and then greasing up that area. Might mess up their clothes!
Update: I ended up grinding some ghost peppers with vinegar and mixing it with black lithium grease. I spread that over my fence and even my neighbors asked me to do theirs too! Their clothes get ruined, skin stained, and eyes burning. So far, it seems like it’s working.
Another update: I found an unlocked iPhone near the property line, so I guess they’ll be back. I locked it in a safe and left it on the patio right in front of the camera.

This sounds like the weirdest dry rub recipe I’ve ever heard.

Just fry it hard, make it all flats.

You should get a trail camera and post the videos online. Might as well make some money from it!

“By jumping the fence, you agree to let me use your face on YouTube in any way I want.”
Have you thought about anti-climb paint?

Yes, anti-climb paint is a great option. It stays on even in bad weather and doesn’t dry out. It’s super hard to clean off, so it’ll definitely make it hard for them to keep jumping over.
Just a heads up though, make sure to put up signs. People will be mad if they ruin their clothes and don’t know why!
@Darby
If you’re jumping someone’s fence on purpose, I don’t care about your clothes getting ruined.

Yeah, it’s not an accident. I’ve caught kids trying to get over my fence for years, but now it’s happening a few times a week, and the fence is getting really messed up.
@River
If they’re damaging it that often, maybe you need a sturdier fence or some deterrent like motion-activated sprinklers. It won’t hurt them but will make it uncomfortable.

Half of it is chain link, and they keep bending it, and the other half is wood, where they’ve been kicking out panels to climb over. A new fence is out of budget, so I’ll have to find another way.
Would it be legal to use a paintball gun on them? I’m not trying to hurt anyone, just want it to stop.
@River
It might be risky, you could get in trouble if someone gets hurt. But maybe putting up signs that say “Active Paintball Range” would help cover you legally?

Hopefully, their shoes get ruined too. Bet those shoes are stolen anyway.
Maybe try setting up alarms around your property. They can be connected to sirens or even notify you or the police when someone crosses the line. But this could get expensive.

I’ve got too much wildlife around, the alarms would just go off every time a deer or squirrel passed by.
Thorny bushes could help.

I’ll probably plant some next year. For now, I’ll be tracking their footsteps in the snow and maybe keep watch from the barn roof if needed. My wife keeps telling me to let it go, but it’s really bugging me.
