UPDATE: We figured out they were getting in through our milk door that’s located by the back door.
I live with my two sisters in a rented house. We have two big dogs. I went out with my friends, and one of my sisters, who lives downstairs, was home getting ready for bed. I left at 8 PM. My other sister came home around 11 PM and texted me asking who was home. She said when she came in, someone was in the bathroom and had turned on the shower. When I left, my bedroom door was closed, and the door leading to the bathroom in my room was also closed. My sister said she got home and saw that my door was cracked open, so she peeked inside and saw no one. The bathroom door was closed, though. The dogs were acting strange, especially my dog, who wouldn’t go into my room even with the door open. She’s a pillow princess and loves my bed. My sister then went downstairs to ask the other sister who was home, and she said no one, just me and my friends were out. She thought it was one of my friends, even though I hadn’t texted her to let her know anyone was there, which I would have. She waited for an hour for whoever was in the bathroom to leave and considered asking if they needed a towel or something, but never did. She felt weird because they were being super quiet and even turned on the bathroom fan after they turned off the shower. She never heard the bathroom door open, and she ended up falling asleep. I came home around 2 AM, and when I walked in, my door was open, but the bathroom door was still closed. I opened it and realized the fan was still on, as well as the light. I thought it was strange that my sister would fall asleep with all that still on. I also noticed that the door leading to my room from the bathroom was open. My friend said they had closed it, and I know they did. I went to bed and didn’t talk to my sister until this morning when I realized someone had been in the house. Some key points: I let my friend park their car in the driveway, so there were four cars, making it obvious that people were home. My dog wouldn’t go into my room and wanted to sleep in my sister’s room. She seemed scared and tried to curl up on her chair, avoiding my room altogether. They didn’t bark, and they usually bark at everyone—even my friends. But after they bark and smell someone, they love them and are all over them, even guests. Since we moved in, random things have gone missing, like a bra, shoes, face masks, and money. We thought we were stealing from each other, but we’ve realized we weren’t. I also found an earring on the floor by the back door that didn’t belong to any of us. The back door has a code to get in, so we wonder if they knew the code. They must have known our schedule to know only one person would be home when the driveway was full of cars. Some people think it could be someone we know since the dogs didn’t bark, but we have a very small friend group and don’t give out codes to just anyone. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. We’ve changed the locks, disabled the code, and will buy cameras. I asked the neighbors for footage, but both of their cameras were off.
Y’all are laughably unprepared for anything… I don’t mean to be rude, but you’re acting like you’re begging for something to happen. You didn’t even check who was in your shower? Your sister falls asleep while someone is in the house? You didn’t notice your dogs’ behavior? You’re posting this long explanation, but did you get any evidence? Have you bought a new lock or thought about a security system? Please tell me you have a CO detector… This whole situation sounds so wild that I honestly think it’s a troll post. It’s too bizarre, with way too many things going wrong.
You’re begging to be victims. You didn’t even check to see who was in the shower?
If they checked who was in the shower, they might have ended up in danger. It’s easy to criticize, but they’re looking for ways to prevent this from happening again.
@Nicol
Also, my sister is 5’1 and 120 pounds, and her girlfriend is even smaller. I’m glad she didn’t go investigate. Who knows what could’ve happened? It was safer for her to stay in her room that night.
@Nicol
Wow, I came here for feedback on a crazy situation, and now I’m being called a troll? This is my first post ever! You clearly came here just to be rude. Next time, if you’re just here to insult, maybe just say that. Thanks for the feedback though!
It seems like you already know the answer. You’re not safe there. You should set up cameras to catch whoever this is and leave for a bit. Make sure to get a real security system because your dogs aren’t enough. Change your locks ASAP, and if you can, change the combo code from the inside. Who do you think it could be? An ex-boyfriend? A friend? Maybe even the landlord?
@Brice
Thanks for the advice. We’ve talked about it, and we have a very small friend group. We rarely bring guys over, but we think it could be someone our mom might’ve made an enemy out of. She moved out a while ago, though, so we’re not sure why this is happening now.
Why do all these weird posts have the word ‘ad’ in their usernames? Is that the default username template now? Like ‘something’-ad? I had a crazy post the other day with a username like that.

Yeah, Reddit used to auto-generate random usernames, and a lot of them had ‘-ad’ in them for no reason. Most people didn’t know they could create their own username, so they just picked the random one. It’s kind of annoying.
