Nonlethal Weapon for Detatched Garage

What are the recommended nonlethal ways to deter intruders from a detached garage containing $20k worth of bikes and tools? Currently, we have door and glass break sensors installed in the garage, along with a motion-activated light directed at the most likely point of entry. The castle doctrine in my state only permits the use of lethal force to protect an “occupied dwelling,” which doesn’t apply to this situation. This has made me consider legal methods to deter potential burglars if the alarm goes off. Would something like a baseball bat in a sock be an option? I’m asking because a friend and neighbor recently had their mudroom and garage broken into, following a rise in property crimes in our area over the past month.

Automatic motion sprinkler…. For deer, cats, and creeps!

They make pepper spray discharge systems. If its for a detatched garage just have it flood with OC.

Paintball marker. For marking them to make it easier for the cops when they flee.

If you don’t already have a dog, think about getting one. Simply having a dog, especially if it spends a lot of time outside, can make your neighbors’ houses more appealing to intruders than yours. It’s not a foolproof solution, but generally, criminals tend to avoid places with dogs.

A non-lethal is a terrible idea. Against a non deadly threat it’s an invitation for a lawsuit or charges under a “booby trap”. Against a deadly threat it’s just gonna piss off the attacker enough to kill you.
