Non-lethal pistol options

I’m seeking a reliable non-lethal pistol for home use and for camping or outdoor adventures. I’ve read about the Byrna SD and LE models and understand that a real firearm might be more effective, but I have a personal situation that makes owning a gun challenging:

I deal with depression that sometimes leads to suicidal thoughts, which is why I’ve avoided having a gun. However, I’m interested in whether the Byrna and similar non-lethal options are truly non-lethal, even at close range.

Please refrain from discussing mental health; I’ve been seeing a therapist for 8 years and actively manage my condition, though progress can be uneven. I’m simply looking for a self-defense solution that fits my needs.

I appreciate any suggestions and assistance!

They refer to them as “less lethal” on their own website. Given that people have been killed by bean bags and rubber rounds, I don’t believe any projectile can be considered completely “non-lethal.”

That said, a model with OC pepperballs would definitely pack a punch.

If you want to use pepper spray for defense, stick with a regular spray can that clearly looks like pepper spray, rather than something shaped like a gun. Pointing a gun-shaped object at someone could escalate the situation, giving them a reason to shoot back in self-defense.

Don’t bluff or make threats unless you’re fully prepared to use force right away.

If you’re pepper spraying someone, they could respond with deadly force. Once they’re blinded, they’re vulnerable, so it may not matter much if the device is gun-shaped. However, I do understand the point, especially when it comes to interactions with police or reaching for something from your belt versus a pocket or bag. If you need to pepper spray someone, their airway isn’t the main concern—it’s about stopping them from hurting you. At that point, their airway is the least of your worries.

By the way, I commend the original poster for recognizing that having a gun in their home may not be the right choice for them at the moment, and I wish them the best in their mental health journey. Good luck and keep striving for happiness! I hope you never have to use any form of force. I just bought my mom pepper spray yesterday, and pairing that with a loud whistle and tactical pen could be a good combo for self-defense and getting help.

The best defense would be security cameras and motion lights while taking self-defense classes. Once you’re more comfortable, learn how to use weapons. Not saying that you have to own them - just learn how to use them and what to do if someone is using one against you.

If you load pepper balls into a Byrna, it might stop someone, but the regular solid projectiles likely won’t. They might hurt, especially if they hit the face, but a determined person could push through the pain.

The standard Byrna fires projectiles at under 12 joules of energy. For comparison, even the weakest 9mm rounds from standard pistols generate over 400 joules, with the strongest reaching around 600. That’s more than a 33x difference in energy, even in favor of the Byrna. I’d suggest getting bear spray instead. It has range and would be more effective than spending money on a Byrna.

Also, refer to the Four Ds: Deter, Detect, Delay, Defend.

You are very right to not own a gun, and I commend you for making that decision. I don’t have a nightstand gun anymore because I have very vivid nightmares and once dove for mine thinking there was someone in my room, only to point it at my girlfriend who ran into the room when she heard me screaming.

That said, I wouldn’t bother with any fancy “gunlike” gimmick. I’d suggest an extra large can of pepper spray or gel like this: https://www.sabrered.com/pepper-spray/sabre-home-defense-pepper-gel-wall-mount

Honestly, what does your therapist suggest? If you’re seeking non-lethal options, I’d recommend boxing and grappling training over relying on non-lethal projectile weapons. In my opinion, those can give a false sense of security. I’ve seen people get hit with OC spray, tasers, and pepper balls, and still keep going. It’s not for me, but I really commend you for thinking this through. I hope you get the support you need whenever you need it!

Paintball gun with frozen paintballs. They hurt.

I know it’s not what you asked…but have you thought about a good dog? Could help on both counts.

Home defense gives you a lot of options. Start by building relationships with your neighbors bring over cookies, host a block party, or organize a neighborhood watch. Then, look into an alarm system with exterior strobes or sirens to alert your new friends. Strengthen your windows with shatter-proof film or hurricane-resistant glass, and reinforce doors with Dooricades. Non-lethal weapons include impact options like batons or baseball bats, chemical defenses like pepper spray, and electrical options like tasers. High-lumen flashlights with strobe settings can disorient attackers. You can even install pepper spray defenses at exterior doors. Having one or more dogs is also helpful. They have better sensory abilities, are naturally protective, and offer emotional support. Defensive landscaping, such as strategic plantings, can also provide security around your home.
