Is Using a Suppressor for Home Defense Legally Smart or Dumb?

In my house, where my family sleeps, I stand my ground. If you threaten me, you earn whatever happens next.

You said they tried to leave and you chased them down. Was that the case? If they were outside or in a car, I wouldn’t chase them.

Did you miss the part where you mentioned chasing them down to shoot them?

Unless it gets media attention, and local pressure forces them to charge you anyway.

In places like Chicago, prosecutors often ignore the law to make an example out of people, even if it doesn’t cost them anything.

Illinois has a castle doctrine law, but it’s limited to inside your home only.

Castle doctrine means you don’t have to retreat, but lethal force is only justified if you fear for your life. Prosecutors in places like Chicago are hostile to gun owners and will pursue charges even when justified.

@Zain
It’s not always true. I’ve seen cases here in Texas where the weapon wasn’t even looked at by police after the shoot.

I built my .300 blk pistol for a specific purpose: home defense. It’s a tool that gets the job done. If it works, it’s worth it.

The kind of DA who would make an example of you wouldn’t risk setting a legal precedent if it was a good shoot with an NFA item.

While it’s legal, remember your item will be taken as evidence and you might not see it for a long time.

This is something people forget, especially those who only have one home defense gun. Make sure you have a backup in case it’s taken for evidence.

After the threat is neutralized, take the suppressor off and put it in your safe. If it’s ruled justifiable, you’re good. Some states require court appearances, but others let officers make the call on-site.

If I use a gun for self-defense, I don’t want to go deaf too. I’m not concerned about replacing the suppressor (though the wait would suck).

Hearing damage is permanent. Guns are loud.

In your house, anything goes. You could use a 24k gold AK50 and it’s the same as using a shotgun. It’s your castle.

The concern is losing the NFA items to an investigation. That’s a valid concern.
