How do you install a safe in your car securely?

If you wanted to put a safe in your car, how would you go about securing it? Normally, in a house, you’d bolt it to the concrete or put it in the wall. But in a car, obviously, you don’t have that. Where would be the best spot, and what’s the best way to make sure the safe can’t just be removed easily?

Also, does anyone know if you can get a GPS tracker to work inside the safe? I read somewhere that a safe might block the signal, but one person suggested using the safe as an antenna. Is that really possible? My insurance won’t cover belongings if stolen from a car at night, so trying to make things more difficult for any potential thief!

If someone’s determined and has time and tools, it’ll be tough to stop them…

You could look into this option from Tuffy Products: https://tuffyproducts.com/products/tactical-lockbox-universal/?sku=253-01

If you have an SUV or truck, there are options like “decked” setups with sliding locker drawers in the bed. Some folks also use tool boxes on truck beds, but those locks don’t hold up long against serious tools.

Another option is Boss Strong Box or Lockerdown.

In the end, these will all bolt down to parts of the vehicle, but how secure that ends up being depends on how you install it. And if you want the ultimate security, you could even consider welding it in.

@Luca
Welding sounds like a great idea, thanks! I only tried welding once on a car, but the part fell off after a couple of weeks, so I might get a friend to help :smiley:

Haha, yeah, if the weld broke, something wasn’t done right!

@Luca
Yeah, totally. I thought soldering skills would make it easy… turns out I was wrong :smiley:

What kind of vehicle do you have? There are console safes made for specific models that bolt into the floor. I have one in my truck, for example.

Good point… I should have mentioned, console safes aren’t big enough. I need something that can hold a laptop and some other things for when I’m traveling. I don’t have a specific vehicle yet, still deciding, but I’d like any general recommendations for how to bolt it down - like, maybe through the floor, or into the body frame?

@Jory
Haven’t seen anything quite like what you’re describing, but I imagine something in a truck bed, bolted through the floor, might be an option.

Makes sense! Do you think a safe in the car would even help, or would it just make thieves think there’s valuable stuff inside? Sometimes I wonder if hiding everything would be better.

@Jory
Honestly, hiding valuables might be your best bet. I usually leave around $50 in small bills in the console, just out of sight, in case someone gets in. A police friend once told me it helps - the idea is, they get their money and leave without looking further.

@Wren
Not sharing my own hiding spot here, but if you want to discuss it privately, I think it’s a pretty solid plan.

@Wren
Haha, I like the idea of a decoy wallet in the glovebox with a little cash and some fake cards. Might make them think they’ve hit the jackpot.

Once put a note on my car saying, ‘Nothing valuable here, please don’t break my windows.’ Windows were intact when I got back!

You could check out Tuffy Security Products and SecureIt Gun Storage. Another option is to use a Pelican-style case or metal box, then secure it with a cable lock or chain to a seat bracket. It’s not perfect but might prevent a quick smash-and-grab.

@Linden
Good point about securing it! I just realized I need to keep wrenches inside the safe. Otherwise, they could just unscrew it!

A lot of safes have internal screws so there’s no exposed hardware. And you can use a cable with a decent padlock.

@Linden
Didn’t think of that. This is why I asked here - thanks for the tip!

I have two biometric safes in my vehicles for my guns.

My dad put a small safe for his handgun under the driver’s seat with a bike lock securing it. Sure, someone could take it if they’re prepared, but it’s not likely with a smash-and-grab. And as for GPS, try running two trackers. Keep one somewhere obvious for the thief to find, and hide the second one well.

Are you planning a big road trip? Why not take stuff in a backpack? Or maybe use a Kensington lock on the laptop, chaining it to something inside the car?
