Glock 17 or Glock 19 for Home Defense?

Hi everyone! I’m trying to decide between the Glock 17 and Glock 19 for home defense. Besides grip size and personal preference, is there any big difference between the two for this purpose?

Both are solid choices. The 19 is more compact, so it’s easier for everyday carry. The 17 is bigger, which means less recoil and slightly more control.

The Glock 17 has a couple more rounds in the magazine, which is handy for home defense. I’d recommend the 17 if you’re just keeping it at home.

Glock 18! (Just kidding) If it’s staying at home, go with the 17 since it’s a bit bigger.

I actually have the 18, love it!

The G17 has the advantage of 2 extra rounds and is a little easier to control with a longer barrel and extra weight.

If this is strictly for home use, the 17 is a great choice. And if you’re adding a light, it balances out nicely on the 17.

But if there’s a chance you might want to carry it in the future, the G19 is more versatile. Both will serve well, but the 19 offers flexibility.

For home defense, I’d go with the 17.

My 19 goes from holster to nightstand and back each day. I also use both the 19 and the 34 (close to a 17) for competitions. I’ve got an M&P Pro Core too, but it doesn’t see much use these days. The 2-round difference on the 19 isn’t a deal-breaker for me.

No major difference other than size.

If you’re considering concealed carry later on, go with the 19. If it’s just for home defense, the 17 might suit you better.

Look into the Glock 34 too—it’s got a longer barrel and is popular with some SWAT teams and for competitions. Less recoil than the 19 or 17, too.

The 17’s longer grip gives you more control, especially if you have a strong grip. That said, Glock grips are blocky and might not suit smaller hands. Check out the M&P 2.0 or CZ P10F if you want something more comfortable.

@Haze
I use a Shadow Systems pistol for compatibility with Glock mags.

But yeah, the M&P is super comfortable to shoot and has a great finish.
