Best pistols for home defense?

I’ve been looking into pistols for home defense but I’m not sure which ones to get. We live in a two-story house, and the plan is to have three pistols—two downstairs and one in the master bedroom. My dad thinks 9mm is the way to go because anything bigger might be too much, and .22 is too weak. I’m open to suggestions.

Here’s the shortlist so far:

  • Sig P320
  • Sig M18
  • Glock 17
  • Ruger Security 9
  • Springfield XD

We were also considering red dots for faster target acquisition.

Context: My sister was recently kidnapped but luckily rescued. The predator is ex-military police and in jail, but he has our address and has been trying to communicate with his family in code. We want to be prepared if anything happens. Any advice is appreciated.

Glock 17 or 19 is a solid choice, but training is key. Pistols aren’t very effective without proper practice. Look into full-size 9mm handguns from CZ, M&P, Beretta, Walther, etc. Comfort matters since everyone’s hand size is different.

@Wynne
Yeah, we plan to train a lot. I’ve used airsoft guns competitively, but I know it’s nothing like the real thing. My mom has long fingers, my dad has big hands, and mine are small, so we’ll test a few options first.

@Micah
If everyone has different hand sizes, you might all want to get your own pistol. What feels great for one person might not work for another. I love my HK VP9, but my wife thinks it’s too thick.

Thanks! We’ll try out different ones at the range and see what works best for everyone.

@Micah
Definitely take your parents to a range that rents guns. It’s the best way to figure out what fits everyone’s hands.

The Beretta 92 with a G conversion is my favorite. It’s reliable, easy to shoot, and has great balance. Just make sure to try different guns to find what works best.

Besides getting pistols, you should upgrade your home security. Cameras, outdoor lights, and strong doors are a must.

We’ve already installed cameras around the house and have lights everywhere. I’ll bring up the idea of stronger doors and window coverings.

@Micah
Remember, a door is only as strong as its fasteners. Consider longer screws and reinforced lock plates for added strength.

Good point. I’ll look into reinforced doors and fasteners. Thanks!

Get a Glock, add a light, and train with it. It’s reliable, and after practice, it’ll feel like second nature.

I’m not looking for the perfect gun, just something reliable that I can practice with. Thanks for the tip!

@Micah
If it’s only for home defense, consider a shotgun. It’s easier for beginners to handle in high-stress situations.

Would buckshot be the best choice, or should I look at other shells?

@Micah
Buckshot is great for most situations, but your choice should depend on your house layout. A light on your weapon is also a good idea.
