Curious if anyone has dealt with this. Whether you had a plan, a defense, or it just caught you by surprise—what happened?
Yeah, about nine months ago. I live in a decent neighborhood with a fenced yard and a nice car in the driveway. One night, around 2 a.m., someone pried open my back door. My dog, Rocco, an 80-pound rottie, went nuts barking and woke me up. I grabbed my pistol, a Glock 20, and cautiously went down the hall, keeping Rocco behind me.
Before I could even get close to the door, I heard them yell, “Forget this, let’s go!” They bolted. Cops found nothing, but a couple of weeks later, a meth lab was busted nearby. Rocco probably saved my life—and theirs too.

Dogs are great deterrents. Plus, they save you from legal headaches. Rocco earned his treats that night.

Here’s a picture of my hero: https://placehold.co/600x400.png
@Nori
What a champ. Hope he’s still around and doing great!

Firing a 10mm indoors would’ve wrecked your ears. Glad the dog scared them off instead.

Yeah, my hearing’s already pretty shot from my job. I just stick with what I know I can handle under stress.

True, but at that range, the intruders would’ve had ringing ears too.
Two years ago, two guys broke into my grandparents’ house while I was there. I was in the basement watching TV when I heard creaking upstairs. At first, I thought my grandparents had come home unexpectedly, but it didn’t sound right. I went to check and bumped into one of the intruders.
He hit me with a crowbar, but I managed to pull my gun and fire. I hit him three times. He’s now paralyzed and in prison. His buddy ran off and was never caught. It still bothers me, but I’m grateful for Castle Doctrine laws.
@Tate
That’s wild. Glad you’re okay.
@Tate
It sucks the second guy got away. Glad you stood your ground, though.
Back in the '80s, my mom and I were watching TV when a masked man burst in with a gun. He demanded money and kept yelling about ‘jewels,’ which we didn’t have. He ended up shooting my mom in the leg before running off. She recovered, but it was terrifying.
We didn’t lock our doors back then. Now, I never leave a door unlocked, even for a minute.
@Casey
Glad your mom recovered. That’s a nightmare scenario.
Two guys tried to kick in my apartment door late one night. I yelled that they’d regret it and chambered a round in my pistol. They ran off after that. The police never found them, but we moved out soon after.
@Peyton
Should’ve opened the door mid-kick. That’d send them flying!

I thought about it but didn’t want to risk it with my baby in the house.
One time, someone tried picking my apartment lock in the middle of the night. I racked my shotgun loudly, and that was enough to make them run. The sound alone works wonders.
From what I’ve heard, dogs and solid locks give you the time you need to react. You don’t have to be 100% ready every second, just prepared enough.

This is why I always carry, even at home.
