So we all know about how perception matters in a court of law and this perception includes of the tool you use. We know ARs are heavily biased against in self-defense and home defense cases, but I was wondering if you guys knew of any AK home/self-defense cases where the simple use of the AK helped the prosecution? Thank you for your input.
This is like your 5th post about this. Have you learned it’s a bad idea yet?

What makes it a bad idea?

Just about every factor. Most Americans are untrained. Self-defense shootings typically happen at short range in populated areas. That’s a perfect mix for someone with a hero mentality to go overboard with an AR or AK and do more harm than good.
@West
I mean, I wouldn’t carry a rifle instead of a pistol, but it seems like home defense specifically has different criteria. I have some other hesitations with the AK though.

Home defense is whatever if it’s your own home, and you don’t have to worry about hitting other houses because whatever you destroy is your own. But if you’re using an AK as home defense in, say, an apartment, that shows no forethought and will definitely look bad to a jury.

I make multiple posts in different subs at the same time to get a wider variety of opinions.
James Reeves did some videos adjacent to that. It was focused on the AR, but the underlying premise still affects your odds of successful prosecution. Going from AR to Mini-14 significantly reduced your risk in the court of law. As such, I can easily see going from an AK to an SKS would do the same. But at the end of the day, you have to choose the most effective tool. I don’t know if I would recommend putting that study as your top concern.
@Nuri
Bold of you to assume anyone except gun nerds would care to know the difference between an SKS and a full-auto assault machine gun.

In their eyes, it’s all 100% optics. The AK looks scary. It looks “assaulty,” whereas the SKS looks far more traditional—like Grandpa’s old gun (assuming it’s still in the stock configuration). It’s braindead, I know. But the average anti-gun American has some pretty braindead viewpoints and assumptions.
@Nuri
He’s actually the reason I had this question. I saw that video and thought about how an AK would look lol.

I can almost guarantee you it wouldn’t be much different than an AR. They are both “super scary assault weapons with extended clipozines.”
@Nuri
Yeah, plus with an AK, it’s the stereotypical bad guy weapon. So using it to defend your home makes you OPFOR in the eyes of the jury, even if it’s a 5.56 AK functionally the same as a Mini-14 or a 7.62 AK functionally the same as an SKS.
@Rowan
Yeah, that’s the travesty. Best not to worry about it, IMO. Just focus on knowing your laws and having a good, clean shoot in the event you’re forced to.
