What’s the best self-defense item to get?

I’m asking because of a situation at school. I don’t want to get into too many details, but I’m being bullied and threatened.

I’m looking for advice from people who’ve actually used self-defense items rather than just Googling options. My uncle and I are planning to buy something soon, but I want it to be something I can legally carry at school and that would help me escape if things get bad. My parents think it’s unnecessary but are supportive enough to get me something just in case things escalate.

Edit: Please stop suggesting guns, bats, or anything else that would obviously get me expelled. Weapons like that are completely prohibited at school. I’ve already informed my counselor, and they’re aware of the threats. I just want advice on items I can use for self-defense that wouldn’t violate school rules. Thanks.

I live in Davenport, Iowa.

Please don’t bring any kind of weapon to school. Even self-defense tools like pepper spray could lead to suspension or worse if found. It’s better to focus on involving school officials or trusted adults to ensure your safety. They are responsible for providing a safe environment, so let them handle the situation.

@Sam
This is solid advice. Find a trusted adult and keep them in the loop.

I think they’ve already tried that, which is probably why they’re asking here as a last resort.

Just to clarify, I’m a girl, by the way.

@Gentry
I’m sorry for assuming. Definitely make sure to document everything and let adults know what’s happening. As for items, a tactical flashlight or a strong pen might be good options—they’re non-lethal and useful in other ways too.

@Wesley
Thanks for understanding. I’ve already told my counselor about the threats, and she’s supposed to talk to the principal soon.

@Sam
Keep a record of everything—dates, times, what happened, and who you spoke to. If things escalate, having documentation will be incredibly helpful.

Consider taking some boxing lessons. They’re great for learning self-defense and building confidence.

Or join the wrestling team if your school has one. It’s great for learning how to handle yourself in tough situations.

@Ashton
Martial arts are another great option. Brazilian jiu-jitsu, for example, teaches you how to defend yourself from the ground and is a great confidence booster.

A small, ultra-bright flashlight could be helpful. You can use it to dazzle someone and give yourself time to escape.

Not only that, but you can use the flashlight itself as a striking tool if you need to. It’s discreet, useful, and non-lethal.

If you’re worried about carrying something that could get you in trouble, focus on learning how to defend yourself with everyday objects. A sturdy binder or even a lunch tray can be used to block or deflect an attack. But as others have said, involve school officials and document everything.

Pepper spray could be an option if it’s legal where you are. Just make sure to check the rules and only use it as a last resort.

A ‘lock in a sock’ can work in a pinch. It’s not a weapon by definition, but it can provide protection if you’re in a bad spot.

Joining a self-defense class could help you feel more confident and prepared.

A personal alarm could be a good option. It makes a lot of noise and can attract attention, which might scare off bullies.

I really appreciate all the advice. I’ll be looking into some of the suggestions like the flashlight and personal alarms. Thank you to everyone who’s taken the time to reply.
