What’s the best home security setup? Need advice!

I just moved into a neighborhood where crime can get a little crazy sometimes. I love my home and yard, but I want to feel more secure. I’ve got some basics like pepper spray, a taser, and even bear spray, plus a Ring system with cameras, lights, and sensors. I’m not into guns, but I’ve been thinking about a non-lethal option like a pepper spray gun. What else should I consider for safety, both for my home and when I’m out walking my dog? Any advice is welcome!

You’re on the right track! Add thorny bushes under windows, like roses or holly. Replace door screws with longer ones and maybe consider a security bar for your doors. Make your place harder to get into than your neighbors’.

I love the idea of spiky plants! I’m a garden person, so I could totally add some mean-looking ones in the spring.

A previous owner of my house said they had roses along the fence for security. They were sad to see them gone!

Punji sticks next? Just kidding, but good idea with the plants!

@Kaius
Maybe not the ‘Nam tactics, but defensive gardening is definitely underrated.

Big scary dogs are cool, but a small yappy dog is even better for alerting you to intruders. You can’t bribe a Chihuahua!

Only downside to spiky plants is escaping through a window during a fire or emergency.

@Rory
Good point! Maybe keep a blanket nearby to throw over them in case of escape.

Dogs are a huge deterrent. Everyone on our street got robbed one year except the houses with dogs.

Get some big work boots and leave them by the door. It might make people think there’s a big guy in the house.

That’s kind of a myth. Most people don’t leave expensive boots outside, and burglars might not fall for it.

@Linden
Totally agree. Thieves know the difference between a fake setup and real deterrents.

Do you have a dog? Big dogs are amazing deterrents.

I have a golden retriever, but he’s super friendly and never barks. Might need to get him a more protective buddy.

You’re doing great so far. Maybe add a steel bar for your doors and consider floodlights triggered by motion sensors.

Steel doors and bars are solid choices. You can’t go wrong with those.

Make sure your valuables are insured and out of sight. As for knives or guns, only use them if you’re confident and trained.

Motion lights are fantastic! They’re cheap, easy to install, and a great deterrent at night.

I’ve added a few solar motion lights already, and they’ve been awesome!
