What’s the Best Handgun for Home Defense?

I’m looking into some handguns for home defense and range practice. If you’ve used or owned any of these, I’d really appreciate your input on what you liked or didn’t like about them.

Here’s my current list of options:

  • CZ SP-01
  • Heckler & Koch VP9
  • Sig Sauer P320c
  • Smith & Wesson M&P 9
  • Springfield XDS 9mm
  • Glock 19

I’ve shot the XDS and the P320c. Between the two, I definitely liked the P320c more. I’m leaning towards 9mm, but I’m open to hearing other suggestions as well.

Why go with a compact for home defense? Full-sized guns offer better capacity, lower recoil, and are easier to shoot.

As Clint Smith once said, ‘If you’re carrying, it’s never small enough. If you’re fighting, it’s never big enough.’

If you’re considering full-size, check out the Glock 17, HK VP9L, CZ P10F, or Sig P320 Full Size.

@Flynt
Another vote for the Glock 17. That’s my home defense setup, and it’s great.

@Flynt
FNX-45. Just saying. :sweat_smile:

I was thinking about compact because my fiancée would also use it, and she did well with the P320c at the range. Are there any full-size models you’d recommend for smaller hands?

@Dani
You might like the Walther PDP series. They have different backstrap options to fit smaller hands and are great for recoil control.

@Dani
The smaller the gun, the harsher the recoil. Full-size is often better for control.

@Dani
My daughter is 4’10" and prefers full-sized pistols. She found compact models like the Glock 43 harder to shoot accurately.

For home defense, go with a full-size handgun. Add a light, and you’re good to go. But honestly, consider a pistol-caliber carbine or a shotgun for better performance.

I’d recommend the Glock 17 over the 19 for strictly home defense. The extra size makes a difference.

Here’s my take on your list:

  • Glock 19: Reliable, tons of parts and holsters, easy to maintain.
  • Sig P320c: Military-approved, modular design, great ergonomics.
  • HK VP9: High-end option, excellent grip, but pricey.
  • CZ SP-01: Great trigger, accurate, but heavy.
  • Springfield XDS: Low capacity and questionable reliability.
  • M&P 9: Solid all-around choice, nice grip texture.

If it’s your first gun, I’d go with the Glock or Sig for ease of use and support.

@Haru
Thanks! Based on your input and others here, I’m removing the XDS from my list.

Training is more important than the gun itself. Pick one that fits you well and practice. Also, consider a pistol-caliber carbine for home defense. Something like the CZ Scorpion is an excellent option.

@Basil
Technically, the Scorpion isn’t a long gun unless you add a brace. Still a great choice for home defense, though.

If you’re focusing on home defense, I’d pick the Glock 17. If you also want to carry, the Glock 19 is a solid choice. Go try both at a range and see what feels better.

I prefer a 12-gauge for home defense. If you’re sticking with a pistol, go with a full-size option for better control.

CZ 75s are amazing. Low recoil, great accuracy, and smooth triggers. If you’re leaning towards a hammer-fired option, they’re hard to beat.

For pure home defense, an AR-15 is the way to go. Lighter recoil, higher capacity, and less likely to over-penetrate than a pistol round.
