I woke up to weird noises and got my fiancé to check. Someone was definitely trying to get into our garage and the side door of the house. There’s visible damage to the garage door, and we’re wondering—what kind of tool could have caused this? It looks rough but weirdly precise.
Could be a cordless grinder with a cutting wheel?

Nah, most people breaking in don’t come that prepared. It’s probably a crowbar, pry bar, or even a hammer with a screwdriver.
We found a rusty knife nearby along with a piece of the garage door that broke off. Surprised how clean the cut looks for such a dull tool.

They probably just pried it until it snapped. Sometimes it breaks cleanly when you bend the metal enough.
Could’ve been a crowbar.

I don’t know… the cut looks too clean for a crowbar.

Look at the bent metal on the left side and those two scratches running outwards. That’s from a tool slipping out. They probably bent it until it broke.

Metal can snap cleanly if it’s bent hard enough.
See the scratch below the damage? Looks like someone hit it downwards with a hammer or crowbar to force it open.
They clearly had no clue what they were doing. Looks like they broke off part of the lock mechanism and realized it got them nowhere. Then they used brute force to bend it until it snapped.
You should consider locking the garage door from the inside and removing that exposed lock system entirely. If they can’t mess with it, they’ll give up and move on to the next house.
Next time, wait behind the door and ask for a password. If they guess Fidelio, dump boiling oil on them. Problem solved.
