I’m 18 and live in Brazil where gun ownership is only allowed at 25 or older unless a relative sells me their rifle, which isn’t an option right now. I’m considering getting a crossbow for home defense. I live in a two-bedroom house with a decent-sized front and backyard. Would this make sense, or should I explore other options?
I don’t think it’s a good idea. There are better options.
A crossbow only shoots once. If you miss, it’s pretty useless for defense, especially if you need something for close combat. Pepper spray would probably be better, even if you get some on yourself. Or maybe look into tools like a heavy plumbing wrench, a wooden bat, or even a machete.
Aside from weapons, think about improving security. Get better outdoor lights, use longer screws in your door frames, install a high-quality deadbolt, and make sure all your windows have functioning locks.

Good point. Think of it as a ranged weapon—pair it with something for close range. Like how Smash Bros works!
Have you looked into larger airguns? Some are strong enough for hunting and self-defense. Models like the Bintac T9 or AEA Megalodon could work well for you.
Crossbows aren’t practical for home defense. Leaving it cocked damages the limbs over time, and it takes too long to load in an emergency. Plus, it’s single-shot, has limited range, and is bulky. Not the best choice overall.
Something like a machete or camping axe might be better for close-range situations. Also, keep in mind intruders often don’t act alone, so you’ll need to think beyond single-use weapons.
I’d be careful—Brazil has strict laws, and crossbows might fall under firearm regulations because they shoot projectiles. You should check with a local attorney about the laws in your area, especially if you’re in a city with stricter rules.
If I were you, I’d invest in a good baseball bat, outdoor lighting, and a solid surveillance camera system. Bright lights and visible cameras can scare off most burglars before they even try anything. I live in the US, and even here, the laws can get messy depending on the state or city. Better to avoid unnecessary trouble.

Luckily, crossbows aren’t regulated here. If anything happens, I’m planning to join the police so I can get a firearm permit as soon as possible.
