Is a Bow a Bad Choice for Home Defense?

Thinking about buying a bow for home defense because I can’t legally get a gun. Would this work, or should I look into something else? Open to any suggestions!

Own a bow for home defense, as the Elvish Council intended

Four goblins break into my house

“Ilúvatar protect me” as I don my mithril chainmail and elven shortbow

A dog or an airgun would probably be way more effective.

@Fintan
Own a longbow for home defense, just like Robin Hood intended. Four bandits break in. “What the devil?” as I grab my forearm guard and 68" bow. Miss entirely because bows aren’t effective at close range. End up using the trebuchet I have on the roof instead. Take out two bandits, and the last one runs in terror. Just as Robin Hood would have done.

Why not use a spear instead?

Honestly, that’s a better idea for close-quarters defense.

As someone who does archery, no. Unless you’re Robin Hood, a bow isn’t practical for defense.

You think I’d need to be as good as Robin Hood to actually stop someone with an arrow?

@Joss
Well, the issue is being able to use it effectively under stress, in tight spaces, possibly in low light, and with little time. That’s a lot to ask even with practice.

Got it. Yeah, it sounds like it might be too much. Appreciate the advice!

@Joss
Have you shot a bow much? It takes quite a bit of strength and skill.

I’ve used one before, but I was planning on practicing a lot. Thanks for pointing it out though!

Can you own airguns legally? If so, there are some powerful options out there, like the Umarex T4E series or big-bore airguns that could work.

Using a bow means a lot of training—building up specific muscles, working on aim, loading arrows, etc. Plus, it’s tough to maneuver with a bow in small rooms or in the dark. You’d need tons of practice.

@Zen
Thanks, that’s helpful to know!

Maybe a crossbow would be a better choice, but I still wouldn’t recommend it.

Hmm, hadn’t thought of that. Thanks!

If it’s legal restrictions keeping you from a firearm, look into cap-and-ball revolvers. Just make sure you check local laws first.

That reminds me of this video:
