How to stop siblings from picking my lock?

I’m moving into a new room, but my younger siblings used to get in by picking or messing with the lock. There’s also a gap in the door. I want to make sure my stuff is safe. Should I fix the door, replace the lock, or something else?

Did they actually pick the lock with tools, or just use something like a credit card to slip it open? If there’s a gap, it might’ve been the second one. You could try adjusting the strike plate to fix the gap, or you could replace the lock. Adding a deadbolt would be even better if you’re really concerned.

Deadbolt is your best bet for real security.

Can I put a deadbolt on a door like mine? I didn’t see any with built-in handles.

Deadbolts are installed separately from the knob. Once it’s locked, no one can slip it open with a card.

How do I fix the strike plate if that’s the problem?

You might need to get a locksmith to look at it if you’re unsure. I’ve only heard tips from my brother, who’s a locksmith, but I’m not one myself.

Yeah, they used a card or something similar to get in. Thanks for explaining. What exactly do you mean by fixing the strike plate?

The strike plate is the metal piece on the door frame where the latch fits. If there’s a gap, you can unscrew it and move it closer to the door frame. If it’s been filed down or damaged, you might need to replace it. You can get one at any hardware store.

If you just want to stop siblings, this might be enough. But if you’re worried about others having keys or more serious security, you could replace the doorknob entirely or get a locksmith to rekey it. A deadbolt would add extra security if needed, but talk to your parents or whoever owns the house first. They might not want a deadbolt on an inside door.

If you go with a deadbolt, it’s not hard to install yourself. You’ll need a drill, a holesaw, and a spade bit. Just follow the instructions and make sure the door is thick enough for it. It’s about a 30-minute job.
