How to automate a gate latch for remote access?

I’m looking for ideas to secure a shared perimeter gate between cooperative neighbors. Ideally, I’d like a remote latch system or even a new gate if needed. Any suggestions? Here’s a picture for reference.

Are you thinking of buzzing people in from your phone or handing out clickers for access? Either way, you’ll need electricity. I’d recommend getting a pro to install the lock and mechanism, and while you’re at it, maybe add some security lighting.

One more thing—check those hinges. If they’re just screwed in and not bolted through, someone could easily break in.

@Mal
Good point about the hinges! I’ll definitely check them.

Yes, I’m hoping to buzz people in using a phone app.

What you need is a dead latch style lock paired with an electric strike. That setup should do the job.

I looked that up, and it makes a lot of sense. I assume there are options for both electric and digital access, right? Thanks for the tip!

Electric strikes are the way to go for something like this. They’re relatively easy to install—check this video for a quick demo: https://youtu.be/CPd5Fg01ABg. Best part? No need to worry about replacing batteries.
