Home defense ideas without knives or guns?

I’m looking for ideas to improve my home security, but I want to avoid using knives or guns. I’ve dealt with depression and had some tough thoughts a long time ago (I’m feeling a lot better now), so I’d rather stay away from weapons that could be risky for me.

Right now, I have a doorbell camera, a backyard camera, and door sensors. I’m also planning to get window film for easier access points around the house.

Just feeling anxious with everything going on and would love any ideas.

Basics make a huge difference: lock everything, check it all regularly, and keep things in good shape.

Thanks! I do check every night. Keeping up with maintenance is something new I’m working on.

Consider pepper gel instead of spray, as it’s less likely to blow back on you and cause issues.

Thanks! I’ve thought about it to protect my dog in case of an attack, even though it’s unlikely. Better safe than sorry.

Pepper gel isn’t as strong as spray. If you need it, go with spray and accept that it may get a little messy. Get a larger can rather than a pocket-sized one.

For window security film to work, it needs to be attached to the window frame properly. Here’s a link to my setup for security ideas.

Hope it helps!

Remember that security film can trap you in a fire if you can’t open the window quickly. It’s kind of a trade-off like burglar bars, though it’s a bit easier to deal with.

Good point! I’ll start mentioning this in future recommendations on security features.

That’s something I’ve been worried about too. The windows I’d secure are tricky to get out of but easier for someone determined to get in.

I’m a bit puzzled about putting so much into home security but then posting a picture of it all online. Plus, using a real name makes it seem even riskier.

Fair points:

It’s been a dream of mine to set this up, and I started when I bought my home in 2019. The cost wasn’t too high back then, and I got a lot of help. The pictures help people understand what worked for me and make their homes feel safer, which is my main goal.

About sharing the details online, I understand the concern. But I’ve taken precautions. My family isn’t high-risk, and I’m just trying to deter potential random intruders.

I went through a traumatic event in 2007 and learned that not everyone has good intentions. My setup gives me peace of mind and ensures I have all the information if I ever need it.

Hope this helps clarify.

@ScarlettEmerson
Nicely done! Your setup looks impressive!

@ScarlettEmerson
Thanks! Your setup is inspiring and gives me some great ideas for keeping things secure.

Make sure you’re using the right adhesive to secure the edges of security film. It’s pointless if it’s just sitting on the window glass.

Good to know! I’ll keep that in mind when I get around to setting it up. Thanks!

I got a dog for my mental health after my cat passed. He’s great, but absolutely terrible at guarding—didn’t even flinch when the Amazon delivery made a racket right outside the door!

@Oli
Haha, sounds like a happy pup! Maybe he was dreaming of treats from the delivery guy.
