Home Defense Firearms: What's Your Go-To?

Curious about what Reddit users rely on for home defense: handgun, shotgun, or rifle? I have various firearms, and while I’ve thankfully never had to use one for home defense, I feel most inclined to grab my 9mm handgun. However, I’m also very comfortable with my AR pistol (7.5" barrel). It’s compact, easy to handle, and accurate. I’d love to hear your thoughts and preferences. Stay safe and have a great day!

Using a 7.5" AR indoors will be extremely loud. Consider a suppressor or keep ear protection nearby to avoid damaging your hearing.

The best firearm is the one you’re most comfortable and proficient with. Each has pros and cons: rifles and shotguns offer better control, but handguns are easier to maneuver. I prefer my carry pistol for its familiarity, but I also keep a shotgun accessible for my wife.

A humorous option: own a musket for home defense as the Founding Fathers intended. Blow a golf-ball-sized hole in the first intruder, then use the cannon at the top of the stairs for the rest. Just kidding—go with what works best for your needs.

An AR pistol is great for home defense, especially if chambered in 5.56 or .300 BLK with appropriate ammo (e.g., V-Max for reduced overpenetration). Keep a flashlight mounted for target identification. For safety, stage electronic hearing protection near your weapon.

I prefer a CZ Scorpion with 147-grain hollow points. It combines rifle ergonomics with manageable recoil and reduced overpenetration compared to 5.56. That said, anything you’re proficient with will serve you well.

Short-barreled rifles like a 6-9" AR in .300 BLK are ideal for home defense due to their power, compact size, and maneuverability. However, secure storage is key if you have kids or guests. If that’s a concern, a handgun in a quick-access safe might be more practical.

I recommend hollow points for 5.56 or similar to minimize overpenetration. For hearing protection, consider suppressed firearms or keep electronic hearing aids nearby.

Before choosing a firearm, consider home security measures like cameras, motion lights, and strong doors. For defense, my two large dogs and solid home setup are my first line of protection. After that, it’s a Glock and a shotgun.

Great insights, everyone! I appreciate the feedback. I live in Florida with strong Castle Doctrine laws and have been training with my AR pistol. My wife is proficient with her AR-style shotgun and carries a .380. We also have layers of security, so hopefully, the firearm stays a last resort. Thanks again for the advice!
