Guys I need help... Raccoons are everywhere and I’m worried about my cat

I’ve got a problem with raccoons hanging around, and I’m worried about my indoor cats. They haven’t broken into anything yet, but I feel like it’s just a matter of time. What’s the best way to keep these guys away without harming them? Any advice?

Make sure your trash cans are sealed tight. If there’s nothing for them to eat, they might move on. Snowy weather also tends to keep them away if you’re in a cold area.

They aren’t going after the trash or bird feeders, which is why I’m confused about what’s attracting them.

@Kai
They probably haven’t found them yet. Better to secure everything now before they do.

Hi, I’m the wife. We moved one of the bird feeders under the deck recently because of the weather, and I think that might’ve encouraged them to come closer. I also think it’s a mom and her kits because of how they act. We’re considering taking the feeder down for now and maybe using some deterrent like cayenne pepper for a while. Hopefully, they’ll just move along on their own.

@Wei
That’s a solid plan. Hope it works out for you!

@Wei
Yeah, taking the feeder down is probably best. I’ve heard of people putting up motion-activated sprinklers or even mild electric fencing around decks to keep raccoons away.

@Kai
There’s a book about dealing with nuisance animals that might help. Let me know if you want the title.

@Kai
Try using a BB gun to scare them off. Won’t hurt them, but it might make them stay away.

I tried that once. It just made them afraid of me opening the door. They still came back, and I couldn’t get another shot at them.

@Ari
Then maybe consider a pellet gun. More effective and could end the problem for good.

I was reluctant to go that route at first, but after they caused serious damage, I had no choice. Now I just deal with one or two a year.

@Ari
Sometimes you have to do what’s necessary, especially when they keep coming back.

You could try using an OC grenade as a deterrent. Place it securely outside with some bait nearby. When they show up, you activate it remotely. Follow it up by leaving rags with a mix of cayenne and your cat’s scent around the area to reinforce the message.

@Abi
That sounds interesting. Are OC grenades legal for something like this?

Yes, since you’d be using it manually and it’s non-lethal. Just make sure to position it away from windows or doors and be mindful of the wind.

Have you trained your cats in self-defense yet?

Haha, not yet! One of them could use some wrestling lessons, though.

Remove anything they’re attracted to, like food or shelter. Motion lights or sprinklers can also make them feel unwelcome. Have you called animal control to see what your options are?

Keep your cat indoors. Problem solved.
