Gun safe with 2 locks

I’m looking to buy a safe that’s too heavy to be carried and can hold long guns. I’d also prefer it to have two different locking mechanisms, such as a classic lock and key along with an electronic keypad, if that option exists. I’m not interested in a Liberty safe (I heard some negative rumors about them and the ATF). Any recommendations?

What you’re describing is either a gun cabinet or a lower-quality metal box that’s sometimes labeled as a “safe.” The added weight comes from extra steel for the locking bolts and fire-resistant material.

Fortunately, you won’t find that in a Liberty or any other decent, legitimate safe. And yes, the rumor is true—Liberty did provide law enforcement with the master code to a few electronic safes in compliance with search warrants. This can be easily avoided by either not using an electronic lock or switching to a dial lock instead.

While electronic locks are quicker, they don’t last as long due to plastic gears. You’re unlikely to find a working electronic lock 100 years from now, but a mechanical lock from the same era will still function perfectly.

Safes that have both an electronic lock and a backup key are typically low-security lock boxes without fire ratings. The only locking mechanism I know of that offers both an electronic and dial option is the Secureram SafeLogic Xtreme EMP-Proof lock. However, a local safe expert I know says it’s not great. They sell this lock for $545, and it can be retrofitted to any safe with a SecureRam lock, which many Canon safes have.

There are two types of safes with both a key and a combination:

  1. Key backup, where the key works as a bypass, allowing opening the door without the combination
  2. Keyed dial, where the key serves to “freeze” the dial only. So without the key, you can’t even attempt a combination.

Which are you looking for?

The second one sounds like what I was looking for

All gun safes are too heavy to carry. And all the safes with electronic locks have a physical key too.

But I think what you’re looking for doesn’t exist.

No, real gun safes do not come with physical keys. The cheap lock boxes and fire safes often do, but real safes don’t.
And there are “safes” that weigh well under 100 pounds. More like steel lock boxes though.

I agree! If it has a key backup, it’s not a good safe. Most of the backup locks are hot garbage, an unskilled picker can open them in a matter of seconds
