Hi all, I work in public service and have had some really scary run-ins with people at or around my work in the last few months. I am trained in de-escalation, but you can’t always win with gentle words and understanding.
What are your favorite self-defense items?
I currently have pepper spray, but I am looking for things that are easier to use. I am a small woman, and that has been used against me, unfortunately.
A tactical flashlight can be a great non-lethal option. The bright light can disorient someone, and many models have a strobe feature for added effect. Plus, it’s useful in everyday scenarios and doesn’t look suspicious.
Consider a sturdy cane or walking stick. It’s discreet, can help create distance, and doubles as a striking tool. There are self-defense canes specifically designed for this purpose.
If you’re open to martial arts, Judo or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are great for learning how to manage larger attackers and develop situational confidence. Even a few months of training can make a big difference.
A heavy-duty tactical pen can be a useful tool for self-defense. It’s portable, doesn’t look like a weapon, and can be used for striking or breaking glass in emergencies.
A loud whistle or personal alarm can help draw attention and possibly scare off an assailant. They’re easy to carry and don’t require much training to use effectively.
If allowed in your area and job, a less-lethal air gun with pepper balls might be worth considering. Brands like Byrna offer compact options, though they can be pricey.
Invest in a quality flashlight with a high lumen count. Not only does it disorient attackers, but it’s also great for everyday use and won’t attract negative attention.
If you’re interested in firearms, a compact handgun like the Sig P365 can be a great option. Just make sure to train regularly and follow all safety regulations.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I’m considering getting a tactical flashlight and possibly upgrading to pepper gel. I might also look into a cane or other discreet tools for added safety.
