Could this be a break-in attempt?

Is the hinge pin missing on that hinge?

Kicked door, hinge pin gone, solid old door. Looks like the person who posted this might be in a dorm.

Yep, it’s missing.

Your door took some serious damage. It needs to be replaced, and it would be smart to upgrade it too. When you get a new one, use longer screws for the lock—it’ll make the door much stronger. A small and cheap upgrade like that can make a big difference.

Looks like someone kicked your door really hard.

Could’ve been an attempted break-in, but it might’ve just been random vandalism. Either way, it only took one good kick.

Can’t believe there’s no deadbolt here. I’m shocked the doorknob didn’t completely fail without one.

You should fix this door as soon as you can.

Use screws that are 4 inches long and go into the door frame. The tiny screws that come with the lock aren’t enough.

That door looks like old solid wood. Age makes wood tougher, which might be why it didn’t break completely. Cheap doorknobs aren’t great, though.

I do have a deadbolt above this lock, but this damage is making me nervous.

Good point, but double-check everything for safety.

@Journey
This could be from one of those social media trends where people kick random doors just to mess around.

Looks like someone really went at your door. It’s surprising the lock held up against that.

First, you need to get the door itself fixed. Once that’s done, reinforce everything and get a stronger lock if you can.

If the building maintenance won’t fix the cracks, you might need to do it yourself. Wood glue and clamps can work to close the cracks. You won’t need to take the doorknob off completely, just remove the screws and the side plate first.

If you’re allowed to, install a reinforcing plate for the edge of the door. It’ll make it harder for the door to split in the future, but it might require a bit of work to fit properly.

Looks like someone tried to force their way in.

Quick question: Was that crack already there, or is this the first time you’ve seen it?

Do you live in an apartment building, and is this your main door? If so, get maintenance to replace it right away.

The missing hinge pin could mean someone didn’t know what they were doing. Also, those screws look like they were installed poorly.

If this is the main door, ask for a solid-core replacement—it’s much safer.

If it’s just a room door inside your place, consider swapping it out for a more secure option.

Finally, if you think someone tried to break in, check outside for any footprints or marks around shoulder height that could show forced entry.

Is this your front door?

Yes.
