Hey everyone, I’ve tried a few stun guns but they all seem pretty weak or just stop working after a while. I have a Pulse+ already, but I’m looking for something smaller that I can carry easily, maybe even one with a flashlight. Just no batons, please. I walk my dog in a neighborhood where there’s this loose dog that makes me nervous. I live in NJ, so carrying a firearm is pretty restricted here. Any suggestions for something solid that I can rely on? Thanks in advance!
Honestly, stun guns aren’t great for self-defense. I’d suggest pepper spray instead. The reason they feel weak is because they’re not usually used in professional settings. Even with a legit police taser, I’d still say pepper spray is better. You don’t want to get too close to someone who’s attacking, and a stun gun requires that. But pepper spray? That’ll stop anyone, or even an aggressive dog, without having to get too close.
@Quinlan
Agreed, pepper spray (or OC spray as some people call it) is really effective. I carry POM brand myself. It’s affordable, reliable, and great for dealing with aggressive dogs too. Way better than a stun gun for sure.
You’d probably be better off with a small gun, even something like a .22. Stun guns just don’t have enough power to do much, and you’ve got to get way too close for comfort.

Yeah, or even learning some basic self-defense with a cane or stick could be more useful. You can carry a walking stick just about anywhere and it doesn’t raise any red flags.

There’s no such thing as a ‘military or police’ stun gun. I think you might be thinking of tasers—the ones that shoot probes. But even those have limitations, especially compared to something like pepper spray or a firearm.
Why not just carry a real gun?
I don’t think anyone here is going to recommend a stun gun for serious protection. They’re just not effective. If you want something non-lethal, a really bright flashlight with a strobe can actually work to disorient someone or an aggressive dog for a few moments.
@Teo
Pepper spray would still be a better choice, but I get what you’re saying.
Stun guns aren’t reliable. Even the police tasers don’t work every time. Why not consider a firearm for protection?
None of them are good.
Go with a real gun if you can.
Check out the civilian options at https://taser.com. They have a few solid choices and even brought back the StrikeLight, which is a stun gun with a flashlight built in.
I’d go for a Glock 9mm.

Sounds like you’re well-prepared. What about adding a Mossberg to your collection?

Only two? I’ve got more than I care to admit, haha. But yeah, a Mossberg is a solid next choice.

I’ve got three long guns too. Thinking of adding a Mossberg 500 next.
@Zayne
Nice choice! I’ve got a Mossberg 590 and a few others. The UTS-15 looks cool, but it’s kind of a pain to use.

Be careful with stun guns. If something escalates and you have to use a firearm after using a stun gun, you could get into legal trouble for not going straight to lethal force. It’s tricky.
