Best Self-Defense Weapon

I’m turning 18 soon and was wondering what the best option is for self-defense. I was thinking about a handgun, but in my state (WI), you need to be 21 to purchase one from a dealer. However, at 18, a shotgun or rifle is okay, I believe. From what I’ve read, buying a handgun through a private sale at 18 is allowed but not from a store, which doesn’t make much sense to me.

I’ve also been considering less-lethal options. It’s just me, my mom, and two younger siblings, and there have been many situations where I wished I had something to protect us. Any ideas? My dad’s side of the family are big hunters, so I’ve taken hunter safety classes and handled rifles many times. My grandpa can also take me to the range whenever I want.

There are some good comments here. Let me clarify a few points:

Gun Laws: In Wisconsin, you can legally own a pistol, rifle, or shotgun at 18. However, federal law prohibits purchasing a handgun from an FFL dealer if you’re under 21. This creates a loophole where private sales of handguns to 18-year-olds are legal. Be sure to familiarize yourself with your local laws and any federal requirements.

Home Defense Tips:

  1. Install a doorbell camera and reinforce doors with 3-inch screws. This will slow down an intruder and buy you time to act.
  2. For a firearm, a 12-gauge shotgun with Federal Flight Control 00 Buckshot is a great choice. Make sure to store it securely and practice handling it safely.
  3. Check out training resources like Active Self Protection for real-world scenarios.

Remember, mindset, tactics, and skills matter more than equipment in self-defense.

This is the best response here, thanks! :pray:

@Palmer
Just a note: If a Form 4 for an NFA item is declined, the item doesn’t go to the ATF. The buyer needs to sell it or transfer it to someone eligible.

Thanks for the clarification! That’s good to know.

Make sure you get proper training before using any deadly weapon.

I’ve used firearms many times and have access to a range. I agree with you on the importance of training.

@Indie
I believe the suggestion was more about training for self-defense scenarios rather than general firearm handling. Check out resources like Active Self Protection for legal and ethical guidance.

@Indie
Range practice isn’t enough. Defensive firearm training teaches you how to handle high-stress scenarios. Take a class—you’ll be surprised at how much you learn.

Consider less-lethal self-defense tools like a tactical flashlight and pepper spray. A bright flashlight can disorient an intruder and give you time to act. Firearms have their place, but it’s important to have multiple layers of defense.

@Perry
Half the day is dark, so a flashlight is essential for identifying threats. I recommend something like the Emisar D4v2—it’s incredibly bright and can disorient anyone.

@Perry
I appreciate the suggestion, but I need something more reliable for protecting my family. A flashlight won’t stop someone bigger and stronger from hurting us.

A shotgun is a good choice for home defense, especially since you have experience with rifles. Pair it with some basic home security measures like door reinforcement, an alarm system, and pepper spray. My favorite home defense shotgun load is Federal Flite Control 00 Buck.

@Chen
Thanks! I’m leaning toward a shotgun and will definitely look into a safe for storage.

A 10.5" AR pistol with a suppressor is an excellent home defense option. It’s compact, effective, and safer in terms of over-penetration compared to many handgun rounds.

Would that really be better than a handgun for home defense? I’m in Wisconsin, so I think it might be legal here.

Yes, it can be. A short-barrel AR provides better control and less over-penetration than a handgun. Plus, it’s easier to aim under stress.

Check out .410 shotguns like the KSG410 or Mossberg 590 .410. They’re lightweight, easy to handle, and have low recoil, making them suitable for everyone in the household.

Thanks, I might reach out to you with questions!

Consider a layered defense approach. Start with home security measures like alarms and reinforced doors. For firearms, a semi-auto shotgun or an AR in 300 BLK is great for close-range defense. Also, check out Pew Pew Tactical’s article on over-penetration—it’s a valuable resource.
