Best gun for home defense if you're new to guns?

I’m looking for advice on the best gun for home defense. I’ve never really shot much before, but I’m open to learning. Ideally, I’d like something that won’t go through walls or cause too much spread that could harm others. Also, I’m in California, so I know the laws are a bit tricky here. Appreciate any suggestions!

First off, I’d recommend going to a gun safety or training class. That way, you can try different guns and figure out what feels right for you. Everyone’s preference is different, so what works for someone else might not be the best for you. I’d also say get comfortable with whatever you choose and practice regularly.

Totally agree with this advice.

You might want to ask on r/Firearms or even r/CAguns since California laws can be pretty unique. But a key thing to remember is to never rely on a gun you haven’t practiced with. Training is essential!

@Frankie
Yeah, definitely check out r/CAguns because there are a lot of restrictions specific to California. Make sure whatever gun you consider is actually legal here.

Just a heads up, any bullet you miss with can go through walls, no matter the gun. So, think about practicing and maybe look into ammo that’s less likely to over-penetrate.

There are a bunch of YouTube videos on the best home defense guns. A shotgun could work, but it doesn’t spread as much as people think, especially at close range. A rifle can be more accurate, but in tight spaces, it can be tricky to handle. Practice is key!

A bit controversial, but I think Pistol Caliber Carbines are great for home defense. They’re short, easy to handle indoors, and have less recoil than rifles. Check out PCC options like the Ruger PC Carbine. But if that’s not your style, a basic pistol like a Glock 19 is a solid choice too.
