Best dog for home defense?

Want to get something that would be good with young kids, preferably not too much shedding/short hair and not too energetic

What role do you want the dog to fulfill? A dog that will bark a lot and alert you? Or a dog that will actively defend in the event of an intruder?

Big and actively defend

We have discovered that Trained Tripping Dachshunds™ (TTDs) can immobilize any visitor, whether welcome or not, by ensuring they can’t walk more than two steps without tripping.

Once the person is on the floor, the dachshunds will overwhelm them with a relentless barrage of face and neck licks, along with playful nips.

For optimal results, a minimum of three TTDs is suggested, but the more you have, the better. A group of five or six can quickly incapacitate multiple guests.

A pack of 20 TTDs should be able to fend off a standard 8-man tactical team, as their necks are unprotected, and any face gear offers little defense against these determined, badger-hunting dogs. The irresistible urge to pet and cuddle the dachshunds will leave the authorities too distracted to take any serious action, instead exclaiming things like “They’re adorable!” and “What’s this one’s name?”

If your home hosts any illicit activities that attract law enforcement attention, a mid-sized pack of Trained Tripping Dachshunds will ensure you’re well-protected.

If you’re trying to include the dog in a home with young children, you may want to focus on the alarm role. Remember that you’ll likely have the dog for many years and your kids will turn into little people who have friends that visit. If they’re anything like my boys, there will be plenty of rough housing that should be very well tolerated by the dog. Our pit will bark, but we’ve spent much time and training ensuring there’s no biting. I don’t want to lose all my time investment to a dog’s misunderstanding of local kids intentions.

As soon as a win the lottery I’ll get one :joy:

Absolutely love my Rott. They take a lot to train but are excellent family pets and I couldn’t be more happy with mine overall. I’d much rather have a low energy, yet effective, Rott than a high energy, spastic malinois or German shepherd. Rotts are more intelligent and twice the size of your average pit, too. Imo, they are the winner. They also have excellent demeanors and are permanent toddlers. I could go on and on but that’s my input.

One negative about Rotts is that they can be overly confident, meaning that if they hear a bump in the middle of the night, they may not alert you but go investigate it themselves, assuming they can handle it. A Rott + a chihuahua would be the best comb

That’s probably top of my list

I’ve got a big German Shepard, bull mastiff mix. That said, he certainly isn’t for home defense. Unless a dog is extensively trained for that role, they shouldn’t fill it. My dog will aggressively bark at anything, so we use him as an early warning with our Ring alarms. Our home defense is my wife’s Sig 365 on her nightstand, my CZ 75 on mine, and my rifle propped up next to my bed. Please don’t rely on a dog for that.
