I’m curious if anyone here has thoughts on using a .22 for home defense. It’s what I have on hand, and I’m aware it’s not the most powerful option, but I’m wondering how others feel about it or if anyone has suggestions on making it as effective as possible.
Here’s my take:
- It’s definitely better than nothing.
- A larger caliber would obviously be more effective.
- Accuracy matters way more than size—if you miss, it doesn’t matter how big the bullet is.
If you’re comfortable with it and have practiced, it’s a solid choice over being unarmed.

This made me chuckle, but the point stands. Training trumps caliber every time.

This logic is mostly true, but there’s definitely an upper limit to how effective a smaller caliber can be in real situations.

I’d like to see an intruder face my antique cannon—because why stop at .22 when you can aim for dramatic overkill?

En garde!
Not sure what’s scarier—the cannon or the idea of someone actually using it!
@Amar
If your house survives, the intruder definitely won’t.

No comment, but now I’m imagining someone rolling out a medieval trebuchet.

I’ve considered .22 for my wife because of the low recoil—it’s easier for her to control under stress. With high-capacity mags and cheaper ammo for practice, it’s not a bad option.

That’s solid reasoning. A good defense setup is one you can handle confidently and consistently.

You could also consider a .22 Magnum. A bit more stopping power while keeping recoil manageable.
@Yan
High-velocity rounds like CCI Stingers or Velocitors might make your .22 more effective for defense. Plus, they tend to work better with semi-autos.
Have you checked out Paul Harrell’s videos on YouTube? He breaks down calibers like .22 for defense really well. Definitely worth a watch.

Agreed! His practical tests are super insightful, and his dry humor is a bonus.
