Anyone know how to set up a single camera that records all day?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to find a good wired camera that can record all the time (and I really want to avoid those subscription-based options).

I know about NVR systems, but they feel like too much for just one camera.

Is there a simpler setup for this? Any brand suggestions would be awesome.

You might want to check out Reolink cameras with Home Assistant. They can record nonstop or just when they pick up motion from people, animals, or cars—you can choose. It’s a do-it-yourself option, but for around $200, you can set up a complete system.

Another option is to just pop in a micro SD card and have the recordings saved directly on it.

Make sure to use an SD card designed for surveillance. Regular cards wear out fast, and you won’t have footage when you need it most.

Good point! Didn’t think of that. It’s not as advanced, but for about $50, it gets the job done if recording is all you’re after.

Can you still view the footage remotely if it’s saved on an SD card? Does it use Wi-Fi for that?

For constant recording, you’d ideally want a camera connected to a recorder. Here’s a good option: https://www.camerasurveillance.net/54-enregistreur-numerique-video-surveillance-4-voies.html.

If you’re recording all the time, an SD card alone won’t cut it. You’ll need a proper DVR setup with a hard drive, or you’ll constantly be emptying the card. That’s just my take, though.

@Haru
What about using an IP camera instead? No DVR needed, and you can check the recordings remotely.
