Any good tips for making my front door stronger?

I’m working on securing my home and want to beef up my front door. It’s a bit flimsy, has a mail slot, and the door frame seems like plasterboard. I’ve heard about using bars or different types of locks. Anybody have solid ideas for making this door more secure?

If you’re able, consider getting a new door. The mail slot and glass panels can make it hard to reinforce fully.

If that’s not an option, try using longer screws on your hinges and get a reinforced strike plate. Maybe look into a bar for extra support across the door.

Yeah, screws instead of nails work better.

Haha, my bad, I always say ‘nail’ for everything, even if it’s a screw. Kinda like calling an SUV a truck.

Username checks out :joy::rofl::joy:

But seriously:

  1. Get a solid door without glass or mail slots.
  2. Install a high-quality lock (like ANSI grade one) for extra security.
  3. Use 3-inch screws on the frame instead of those little 1/2 inch ones.
  4. Consider a camera or doorbell with video, maybe even a peephole one if you’re in an apartment.
  5. For even more peace of mind, get a ‘dooricade’ so no one can break it down in a flash.

Stay safe out there!

Interesting point… surprised this got downvoted. People don’t always want to hear it, I guess.

True, but better than using some brands that might sell your info to who knows where :joy:

That’s why I went with Unifi Protect—managing my own system feels safer.

Yeah, happens a lot on this forum. Some folks just downvote everything I say…

Metal security doors are a good option. With glass, it’s just too easy to break in.

Maybe some razor wire around the glass molding?

Yep, metal security doors make a huge difference.

You could also try adding a crossbar, but avoid anything sketchy or not legal where you live.

Yeah, especially if any modifications involve stuff that might not fly legally.

You could try using a couple of 2x4s as a crossbar. It’s simple but effective.

Lock it, tint it, add a burglar bar, and use a mail slot blocker. Windows and back doors are often weak spots too.

Get a loud dog near the door. They’re great alarms.

That’s what I did. My dog sounds terrifying to strangers!

Consider replacing the whole door or covering the window and mail slot. They’re serious risks since they let people reach in or see if you’re near the door.

Since your entryway is recessed with walls on either side, you could set up a telescoping pipe bar across it. It would need some strong support, like studs in the wall, but done right, it’d make it almost impossible to move that door.
